Our culinary journey is fueled by a love for exploring local markets, discovering seasonal flavors and experimenting with diverse cuisine. From sourcing the finest spices from around the globe, to connecting with local farmers, we strive to bring the passion and stories to you.
Our travels have tremendously formed our love of flavor. We’re big believers in the ‘less is more’ approach, especially when it comes to cooking, however, our explorations and relationships run deep. Our hive will constantly be buzzing and evolving as we continue to travel and build connections around the globe.

Shelby Matthews, Founder
My journey as a culinary forager began in a Chicago cooking school, where I first discovered how food could transport, but also bring people together. What started as intuitive cooking for loved ones evolved into a deeper calling - a desire to seek out nature's finest ingredients and share their stories.
Though self-taught, I found my true path in wandering between kitchen and nature, letting curiosity guide me to discover exceptional flavors and provisions. Like the honeybees that inspired La Ruche, I became drawn to traversing both familiar and foreign terrains - from local valleys to far-flung orchards - gathering distinct tastes and traditions along the way.
This wanderlust for unique ingredients and memorable experiences flows from what started in my restored cottage along the Severn River, where I live with my husband and two children, to my new market in the greater Annapolis area. Here, La Ruche has grown into a haven for fellow food enthusiasts, celebrating the art of gathering in all its forms.
Whether I'm curating artisanal boards, hosting intimate dinner parties, teaching others to explore flavors, or foraging for inspiring ingredients to share with home cooks, each day brings the joy of pollinating our community with new tastes and traditions. Through La Ruche, I continue to celebrate food's remarkable ability to transport us, create connections, and sweeten life's moments together - one carefully gathered treasure at a time.

My path to culinary foraging began unexpectedly, when our youngest children formed an instant friendship in kindergarten. Through playdates and family gatherings, I discovered Shelby's remarkable ability to transform simple ingredients into transportive experiences. While I had always nourished my family with home-cooked meals, watching Shelby's intuitive approach to gathering and preparing food opened my eyes to new possibilities in the kitchen.
Under her guidance, my own culinary curiosity blossomed. Family favorites emerged from our shared experiments - including the now-legendary "Shelby Potatoes" - and my kitchen became a space of discovery and joy. Over time, our collaboration deepened as I assisted with recipe development, cooking classes, and intimate gatherings - each experience reinforcing the power of food to create lasting connections.
While Shelby wandered valleys and orchards in search of distinct flavors, I found my calling in nurturing the hive itself. My background in business and accounting, combined with years of understanding Shelby's unique approach to gathering and preparing food, created a natural foundation for partnership. When the opportunity arose to join forces in creating La Ruche, it felt like a natural extension of our shared journey. Together, we've created a perfect symbiosis. Through La Ruche, we're building more than a business; we're cultivating a space where friendship, food, and gathering intertwine. As we continue this adventure, I'm excited to help transform each carefully gathered treasure into moments of connection for our growing community.
